Ariel Sharon - Gaza Withdrawal

Note: 2/5/06 Israel currently has a new Prime Minister. Ariel Sharon is in a coma. What a difference a couple of months makes...

The whole saga is really interesting - if you haven't heard/seen Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has ordered the withdrawal of all Israelis from the Gaza Strip, a piece of land hotly contested and a source of much violence and hate in that area of the country. This withdrawal means that the Gaza strip will now be completely occupied by Palestinians.

This withdrawal is unique/interesting because Mr. Sharon has had to go against the wishes of his political party and the platform on which he was elected. While the majority of Israelis agree with the withdrawal, many in the government do not and Mr. Sharon has become an outcast of sorts in his own Political Party. Yet, the withdrawal is going ahead and in approximately 24 hours, Israeli soldiers are going to be knocking on the doors of those who have not evacuated their homes.

Imagine soldiers knocking on your door and telling you that you must leave your home now if not they will remove you and your family by force. These are not soldiers from a foreign nation, these are soldiers who have sworn to protect you and your country. They might even be related to you in some distant way.

Currently, the only real backer for this withdrawal seems to be George Bush (I won't even say the USA) with many other countries saying that they are not for the withdrawal.

Anyhow check all local news agencies for more news.

And check wikipedia for more information - the Israeli Political System is quite interesting.
